Washington- American Egg Board along with Puglisi Egg Farms and HATCH for Hunger has donated 64,000 eggs and two large refrigerated coolers to Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, D.C.

Everyone wants high-quality, nutritious food, and egg farmers are committed to fighting hunger by donating eggs to the local food banks and communities year round ensuring that everyone gets to access this complete source of protein with essential minerals and vitamins.

New Jersey-based Puglisi Egg Farms from Howell donated eggs on behalf of America’s egg farmers.

President of Puglisi Egg Farms John Puglisi said, “America’s egg farmers, and really every farmer or person who produces food, strive to be a good neighbor, community member, and business owner. We want to help those in need in our local communities. We’re proud to provide high-quality, nourishing eggs to food banks in our communities including the Capital Area Food Bank.”

The most requested food at food pantries and in the Washington, D.C. region is eggs. The food pantries need more donations like the one made today. The Capital Area Food Bank’s 2023 Hunger Report revealed that a third of the region including the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia experience food insecurity. Food insecurity is affecting every 1 in 5 households, even the households earning $120,000 which is the median income for the region. The eggs donated by egg farmers in America will provide meal solutions for individuals and families in local communities this easter season.

Director of corporate partnerships at the Capital Area Food Bank Emily Lauer-Bader said, “Households with kids are 60% more likely to be affected by food insecurity than households without kids. Families need nourishing food, and many are struggling to access versatile, high-quality protein. Eggs are often one of the products most in demand. We are grateful to America’s egg farmers, Puglisi Egg Farms, and HATCH for Hunger for their generous donation today.”

America’s egg farmers donated over 50 Million eggs to their local food banks and communities in 2023. This is the second year that America’s egg farmers have donated thousands of eggs to the Capital Area food bank along with the local D.C. Community. Not only this, America’s Egg farmers hope that they will continue this tradition in the coming years as well.

This donation by America’s egg farmers is paired with a donation of 64,000 eggs for Monday’s White House Easter “EGGucation” Roll. The eggs donated will be used for egg decorating, the event’s egg hunt and to serve egg-based food to attendees and the iconic egg roll itself.

The President and CEO of the American Egg Board Emily Metz revealed that eggs are always in great demand at the food pantries and food banks. With 90% of homes in America having eggs in their refrigerator, it is a key part of the diet for most Americans. Giving communities access to good sources of protein like eggs helps in combating hunger and food insecurity. America’s egg farmers are feeling proud to be able to provide eggs to families this Easter season and continue to provide donations to communities across the U.S.

One of the major challenges food banks and pantries are facing is inadequate packaging and refrigeration for donated items especially for the perishable food items like eggs. Capital Area food bank also received two large, refrigerated coolers along with 64,000 eggs to store perishable donations.
