According to the data available, more than half of the Coloradans are experiencing hunger. One out of every 10 Colorado residents are experiencing hunger.

Feeding Colorado is a collaborative initiative involving Feeding America food banks serving Colorado and Wyoming. Its mission is to improve food resources and provide access to healthy, fresh foods for people in Colorado facing food insecurity.

These food banks distribute food to around 1300 non-profit agencies such as daycare centers, soup kitchens, shelters, and senior and youth programs serving the community. Five food banks part of Feeding Colorado have distributed around 123 Million pounds of food to families in need.

The need for families increases during the holidays as families then struggle to make ends meet.

Food bank Director Susan Leonard said, “With the difficult economy, we are not seeing any particular time that people are needing us more than other times. Many people are in need all year round right now”. More and more families and individuals are turning to food banks for assistance because of the rising costs of food.

These food banks do not rely on government agencies to help them out but numerous businesses, churches, schools, and individuals donate food and money at the food bank.

Mostly, the items donated to the food bank include hygiene items such as toothpaste, dental floss, shampoo, and canned soup and vegetables.
