As more and more families are facing food insecurity, the local food banks are seeing the same trends.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that nearly all kinds of households saw an increase in food insecurity. The Estero Bay Kindness Coalition is now assisting approximately 184 families along the Northern San Luis Obispo County Coast, marking an increase from the previous year’s figures.

The number of families increased from 144 families to 184 families. The food bank has nearly 120 volunteers to pack the bags of food and deliver them to families in need.

It’s getting tough for people to make rent and to keep up with the other stuff. There is no money in the bank at the end of the month and it becomes difficult to raise children

Michael Wolfe, the owner of the Avocado Shack in Morro Bay owned some space and donated the same to Estero Bay Kindness Coalition so that the organization could have more room, and that too without bearing any additional cost.

The increasing food insecurity can be attributed to the loss of federal COVID-19 pandemic assistance and the rising costs of goods.

The Estero Bay KIndness Coalition is always on the lookout for volunteers and food donations to advance its efforts for the needy in the community.
