HUD is facilitating the construction of new affordable housing and infrastructure development for low-income tribal communities.

September 5, 2023

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced giving $128 Million to tribal communities for making investments in affordable housing. The announcement was made today by HUD’s Secretary Marcia L. Fudge in Kenai, Alaska where she gave $7.5 Million to Kenaitze Salama to build 18 new housing units and increase the number of homes available to low-income Alaskan native families.

HUD’s Secretary Marcia L. Fudge said, “This vital funding allows Tribes to make investments in safe, affordable housing. I am pleased to make this announcement here in Kenai, Alaska, where Tribes face pressing and unique challenges in providing housing to families. Indian Housing Block Grant Competitive awards provide Tribes with funding to address these challenges in ways that best serve their communities.”

The Indian Housing Block Grant Competitive (IHBG) played a significant role in strengthening American Indian and Alaska native communities. These funds will be used for developing infrastructure, new construction, and rehabilitation. The program is important for the tribal communities as it injects financial resources which in turn assist in establishing new affordable housing options, especially for the disadvantaged tribal families. Since 2019, the IHBG Competitive grants given to Tribes have exceeded the IHBG Formula grants by an average of 67%. 94% of these funds have been used for constructing new housing units, tackling a significant demand in Indian country.

HUD is all set to make another investment in tribal communities by giving $128 Million to 22 communities via the competitive program.
