Washington- The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded $12.9 Million to 16 PHAs in 9 states so that they can provide housing assistance to young adults coming out of foster care and experiencing the risk of homelessness. The Foster Youth to Independence Initiative (FYI) gave the funding.

Marcia L. Fudge, HUD’s Secretary says, “Helping young adults to find a place to call home allows them to focus on their goals and dreams without having to worry about where they are going to lay their head at night”. HUD is excited to work with Public Housing Agencies and assist them in fulfilling the housing needs of the youth aged out of foster care programs so that they have access to safe homes.

The initiative strives to create a community and help the youth experiencing homelessness or the ones who are involved with the child welfare system. The PHAs who have a partnership with the Public Child Welfare Agencies get the housing choice voucher assistance from FYI.

Consequently, the PHAs are capable of providing housing assistance to young adults between 18-24 years of age who are about to leave foster care in the next few days.

HUD is investing in a community response to homelessness faced by child welfare-involved youth through the Foster Youth to Independence Initiative (FYI).
