Jeff Olivet To Codify Governor’s Homelessness Orders Attends HOME IL

USICH Director Jeff Olivet participated in the bill signing of HOME IL last week which codifies the Illinois Interagency Task Force on Homelessness and the community advisory council on homelessness. Both of these were created by Governor J.B. Pritzker by executive order.
Director Olivet said, “Governor Pritzker and the Illinois state legislature have prioritized helping people without a home. By codifying interagency efforts to reduce homelessness via the HOME IL bill, the state is setting a strong foundation for the future.”
The Interagency Task Force and Community Advisory Council will work to develop a comprehensive plan to end homelessness by working across 17 Illinois state departments and agencies and over 1000 programs and policies. The main goal of this plan is to prevent entry into shelters and ensure that shelter stays are limited and lead to quick transitions into stable living conditions.
Homelessness affects communities of color in Illinois and Nationwide. 61% of the state’s unhoused population consists of black Illinoisians compared to 14% of the general population. HOME IL follows an equity-based approach including the voices and contributions who have been homeless in the past.
