Phoenix- Rep Ruben Gallego attended the groundbreaking ceremony of a new 60-unit affordable senior community today.
Rep Gallego said, “It is an honor to participate in the groundbreaking of Garfield II, a project I secured funding for that brings more housing to the Valley. But there is still work to be done. Ending Arizona’s housing crisis requires leaders on the local, state, and federal levels to come together. I have been and will continue to fight for more affordable housing for all Arizonans.”
Affordable housing is a major issue in the Garfield neighborhood. The study shows that 46% of renters are burdened by rent which means that they spend more than a third of their income on rent. Seniors above the age of 65 years or above are 63% burdened by rent.
Out of the 60 units, 13 housing units will be limited to households earning at or below 20% of the median income, 8 housing units will be for households earning at or below 50%, and 39 housing units will be for households earning at or below 60%. There will also be on-site social, health, and educational programming provided by the Greater Phoenix Urban League.
Rep Gallego sent a letter to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to address the affordable housing crisis in states like Arizona by increasing the financing for multifamily housing.
Rep. Ruben Gallego announced that $93.5 million in HUD funding is coming to Arizona to support various housing and community development projects, including over $6.4 million for Phoenix through the HOME Investment Partnerships Program, which is helping to fund the Garfield II project.
