Nearly 2,770 Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) in 50 states were awarded $3.16 Billion in funds by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. With these funds, the states and Public Housing Authorities can make capital investments in their public housing stock. From coast to coast, grants are awarded to all communities whether they are large, small, rural, or urban.

HUD’s Secretary, Marcia L. Fudge said, “As I have traveled the country, I’ve heard time and again from families and seniors in public housing that a decent home in a safe community shouldn’t be too much to ask for”. HUD is committed to working with the public housing authority partners and guaranteeing homes to the individuals and families living there.

The grants will be provided through HUD’s Capital Fund program, offering annual funding to public housing authorities so that they can build, renovate and modernize public housing in their communities. Consequently, the housing authorities can make use of the federal funding to make several improvements in housing such as replacing roofs, making energy-efficient upgrades like installing heating systems, and water conservation.

The federal government has been investing Billions of dollars in developing and maintaining housing along with providing critical support through capital fund grants.
