The grant provided by HUD will expand housing counseling services along with homeownership and housing support to underserved communities.

January 9, 2024

Washington- The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Office of Housing Counseling gave $40.25 Million in grants to housing counseling services for homebuyers and renters.

HUD’s Secretary Marcia L. Fudge said, “Housing counselors across the country connect Americans – particularly those from disadvantaged communities – to affordable, safe, and quality housing in the communities of their choice. The funding we are announcing will help hardworking people find homes for themselves and their families.”

HUD plans to award grants to more than 150 housing counseling agencies and intermediary organizations through the 2023 Office of Housing Counseling Comprehensive Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO). These funds will provide education and resources to individuals and families so that they can make informed decisions regarding their housing needs. The allocated funds will be used to support various counseling services offered by HUD-approved agencies.

These services cover a range of topics such as financial management and literacy, homeownership, and affordable rental housing. Out of the total funding, three million dollars will be specifically directed to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, other Minority Institutions, and their partner agencies. This targeted allocation aims to address the racial homeownership gap and assist underserved communities.

HUD’s Assistant Secretary Julia Gordon said, “We’re pleased to make these funds available to housing counselors to help American households identify and address their housing needs. Housing counseling continues to play a vital role in helping homebuyers, homeowners, and renters access and sustain suitable housing, particularly as housing instability and costs are on the rise.”

Interested applicants can find all the details about the submission requirements and process on the official website. Applications regarding the same must be submitted by February 8, 2024.
