Pittsburgh Tenants Share Concerns About The New Property

The tenants staying at the Homewood House Apartments are feeling unsafe on the property because of no security guard.

Tenants are worried about their safety at the Homewood House Apartments on Frankstown Avenue.

The 100-unit apartment building in the heart of Homewood has been without a security guard this year. Several senior residents are worried about intruders entering the building and using drugs as there is no security guard.

A resident named Nancy Walker has lived in the building for eleven years and demands that there should be protection and a guard in the building. Numerous residents are asking the management and the company to spend money on security.

Tenants think that a new owner is unresponsive to their problems and not investing in the property.

Online Allegheny County real estate records show that Homewood House Apts LLC owns the property, with an address in New Jersey. This LLC shares an address with NB Affordable, a company that recently acquired over 1,300 affordable apartments in the Pittsburgh area from AHRCO, a local affordable housing landlord. These properties are privately owned but receive public subsidies to provide housing for low-income tenants.

According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development record, the sale to NB included Bellefield Dwellings in Oakland, Tribrad Apartments in Braddock, Mon View Heights in West Mifflin, and Kelly Hamilton Apartments in Homewood.

Lakeside management has been managing the properties by cutting costs and security among other things.

Tenant Kelley Johnson in another property speaks about the problems in her apartment such as water coming out of ceilings, sinking bathroom floor, and other such issues. Johnson is not able to sleep peacefully at night and is always worried that something in the house will collapse.

The tenant also spoke to Lakeside Management asking them to resolve the issues but has got no response. Johnson says that being low-income does not mean that such tenants do not have the right to stay safe.

Tenants advocate Redwood also reached out to Lakeside and HUD officials regarding the residents’ concerns at Homewood House.

Lakeside Officials said, “Most of the residents at the Homewood house are happy with our changes to the site and have been extremely happy with the direction that the building has taken under our management”.

Besides this, the Lakeside official also said that they’ll be posting someone at the door to sign in the guests. Redwood is expecting that more residents will come forward to form tenant councils.
