According to a new study, racial disparities tend to persist among low-income households that do not participate in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) but not among SNAP participants. There were 4974 households whose income was below 130% of the federal poverty line and were eligible for SNAP under federal rules.

The survey conducted on the ones that did not participate in SNAP revealed that black or multiracial households are likely to be more food insecure than white households. Compared to this, the households that participated in SNAP were black but had little chance of being food insecure than their white counterparts.

Compared to the 7% of white households, around 20% of the black households and 16% of the Latino households were found food insecure at some point or the other. Still, SNAP is highly effective to reduce food insecurity along with racial disparities in the USA.
