COVID-19 Rental Assistance
The COVID-19 pandemic was not only a health risk to our country’s population but an economic hit unlike one in our lifetime. The forced closures of businesses and isolation due to sickness and or exposure caused many of the most vulnerable, those living pay check to paycheck, falling very behind in their financial responsibilities.
Many in the beginning, were left jobless or had fear of working due to the possibilities of contracting COVID-19.
The government was able to come in to assist the Americans struggling financially during the pandemic. They were able to provide financial assistance and approved an eviction moratorium. This provided a temporary hold on evictions due to non-payment. This program has since ended, thus landlords have been able to move forward with the eviction process.
Additionally, the government put a hold on foreclosures during this same time. This allowed assistance to those who would have otherwise foreclosed on their homes during the pandemic to transfer loan payments to the end of their loan extending the loan for a period of time.
These programs were able to provide those in danger of homelessness the time to try to come out of the financial trouble due to effects of the pandemic.
The Emergency Rental Assistance Program
Both the renters and landlords can make use of the emergency rental assistance program. You can get the database from the treasury department and seek rental assistance from state, local, tribal and territorial programs.
The emergency rental assistance program may also cover electricity, gas, water, sewer, and trash removal. In addition to this, the emergency rental assistance may also cover fees such as: internet service, moving expenses, and reasonable late fees.
Before applying to the emergency rental assistance program, you should research whether you are eligible for the program or not. Most programs have not only income limitations but depending on the assistance there could be other requirements. Normally the households who’s combined income is below the median average of the area are considered eligible for assistance. In addition, eligibility is provided to those who are low-income seniors and those who are disabled either physically or mentally with minimal incomes.
For specific information you can reach out to your local Housing Authority. Those in need of assistance need to also understand that depending on the location in the country income limits may be vary drastically.
Those at risk of homeless or are experiencing housing instability are also eligible.
