Who is Eligible for Public Housing?
Each local public housing agency (PHA) is responsible for determining eligibility based on the following criteria:
- Total income per year
- Low income families, seniors or those disabled
- Must be a US citizen or eligible immigration status
HUD develops income limits that are used by PHAs as a factor to determine eligibility. ‘80%’ income is considered a ‘Lower Income Limit’, but ‘50%’ is labeled as a ‘Very Low Income Limit’
Please Note: Some eligibility requirements & income limits are specific to the particular area. In other words, you could be eligible in one area but not eligible in another. Qualifying applicants could be eligible for the below housing assistance:
- Housing choice vouchers
- Subsidized Housing
- Rental assistance
- Local & federal public housing programs
