Eligibility for LIHEAP assistance
The eligibility requirements for LIHEAP are not the same in all states and vary greatly depending on the state, region, or city. You can find the eligibility requirements on benefits.gov. Every local LIHEAP office develops its eligibility guidelines which include:
- Individuals or families enrolled in other assistance programs like SNAP, SSI, and TANF depending on the financial need may become eligible for assistance under the LIHEAP program.
- Being eligible for the program does not guarantee that you’ll receive assistance for sure as it depends on the availability of LIHEAP funds in a year.
- On average, only 20% of eligible households receive assistance under the LIHEAP program. Once the allotted funds are over, no further assistance is provided until the additional funds are available.
