How to Hire a Mover and Protect Yourself?
To protect yourself against moving fraud, get tools to protect your move. Also bear these tips in mind to avoid moving scams.
Do’s
- You need to get a company representative to come to your home and give you a realistic estimate of the move.
- Ask several movers for the written estimate. The estimates will be based on time, number of movers required, number of rooms, and who does the packing.
- You need to verify the company like whether the company is insured or not if your goods get damaged during the move.
- Get the U.S. Department of Transportation number from the company to check if the company is registered or not. You can use the FMCSA database to check it.
- For checking the complaint record, you can reach out to the local, county, or state consumer affairs agency.
Don’t
- Do not accept an estimate given on the phone.
- Do not sign a blank contract.
- Do not pay in advance or cash for the move.
- Do not allow the movers to pack your goods in the truck before reviewing the contract and getting the estimate again. Ensure this before the move starts.
