Marshalltown To Benefit From $5 Million To Combat Lead And Other Health Hazards

HUD is giving $5 Million to combat lead and other health hazards in homes of low income families with children.

January 8, 2024

HUD’s Iowa State Director Julie K. Sleeper presented a check of $5,026,330 for lead hazard reduction and healthy homes supplemental funding to Iowa on December 11, 2023. The lead hazard reduction grant program strives to identify and control lead-based paint hazards in privately owned housing for rental occupants. The city of Marshalltown has been receiving funding for the past 20 years and has repaired around 700 homes with the help of this funding. Now, these new funds will be used to address lead and other health-based hazards in 100 housing units to provide safe homes for low-income families having children.

The funds are a portion of over $140 million awarded by HUD in August 2023 to 36 state and local government agencies across 19 states. This funding is dedicated to protecting children and families from lead-based paint hazards and other home health risks. During the announcement of these awards, HUD leadership emphasized the significance of this investment for the health and safety of communities across the nation.

HUD’s Secretary Marcia L. Fudge said, “Today, we are renewing our steadfast commitment to improving the lives of children and their families. The funding provided today will enable communities to make the homes of families of limited means healthier, and improve their children’s school attendance rate, learning, and, eventually, job prospects.”
