Department Of Veteran Affairs Urges Veterans To Get Lung Cancer Screenings

Veterans are urged to get lung cancer screenings done as they are at high risk of developing lung cancer.

November 2, 2023

November is widely known as the Lung Cancer Awareness Month. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is urging veterans to get the National Lung Cancer Screening. It is because veterans and non-veterans are at high risk of developing lung cancer.

The eligibility criteria for the VA lung cancer screenings are the veterans aged 50-80 years, who used to smoke in the past years or smoked, and the veterans who smoked cigarettes for 20 pack years.

The veterans can talk to their physicians about the risks and benefits and then the veterans can take up a simple test to find out about their health.

Dr. Nichole Tanner, a pulmonologist, is part of the Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Clinic at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston VAMC. In 2012, the center was chosen as one of eight sites for a three-year demonstration project to evaluate the requirements for a lung cancer screening program within the VA. After the project’s completion, the medical center continued the lung cancer screening program due to its perceived value in improving veteran health.

She also spoke about the significance of lung cancer screening among veterans and how veterans can get the screening done.
