El Paso, Texas- The Department of Veteran Affairs is planning to open a new VA healthcare facility in El Paso.
A new Health Care Center (HCC) spanning 492,995 square feet is set to be constructed on Fort Bliss, situated opposite the William Beaumont Army Medical Center. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs, has awarded a $617 million contract for this project to Clark Construction Group, LLC, based in Bethesda, Maryland.
It is expected that the new healthcare facility will provide service and access to better healthcare for more than 54000 veterans in the El Paso area by increasing the staff which will reduce the waiting time.
Once the new facility officially opens, the entire staff will be moved over there by the Department of Veteran Affairs.
Some local veterans feel that the new location will be difficult to access for veterans.
Local veteran Kenneth Compos said, “That location is kind of remote. There’s not a lot of housing over there. To the current VA, there’s housing all around it, people are able to get to it nice and easy… and then if they end up having to get like a post pass or something to get on there because not all veterans have access to post. So that could cause a problem too”.
The outpatient services provided in the new healthcare facility include mental health, primary care, specialty care, ambulatory surgery, and the list goes on.
The Department of Veteran Affairs is planning to turn the current facility into a VA nursing home or residential rehab treatment program center once the new facility opens up. The new facility will be completed by 2030.
